FAQ

Does height matter in Gakuran?
Yes. Half the roster's official cards publish a recommended height, community guides document three more style-height interactions (Boxing short, Slugger tall, Hakari disputed), and reach decides whether grab- and kick-based kits connect consistently.
What height should I pick in Gakuran?
Mid-height is the safe all-rounder for an unpicked style plan. If you already know your target style, pick its official build — short for Ali and Boxing, tall for Wing Chun, Wrestling, Capoeira, and Hakari, medium for Karate — or commit after rerolling, since rerolls redraw height.
Can you change height without changing your style in Gakuran?
Height is redrawn by rerolls rather than edited directly — appearance attributes and your fighting style both live on the Stats menu's roll system. See the reroll guide for what each roll redraws and what it costs.
What height is best for Boxing in Gakuran?
Short — around 5'1" / 155 cm or less, per the official card, which also credits Boxing with the fastest M1s in the game. It is the one style where the official recommendation and the community height meta agree exactly.

How Height Works in Gakuran

Height is one of the physical attributes picked at character creation, alongside ethnicity — and it is not cosmetic. Reach decides whether the grab- and kick-based kits connect consistently, and half the roster’s official style cards publish an explicit recommended build. You never edit height directly: rerolls redraw it from the Stats menu, which is why a “bad roll” of height and style is one problem, not two.

The Official-Card Height Table

Ten styles carry a published recommended build on their official cards (transcribed and card-read through August 29, 2026). This is the developers’ own guidance, not community vibes:

StyleOfficial recommended heightThe card’s reasoning
AliShort — 4’11”–5’3” (149–160 cm)Tall stays viable for reach; medium explicitly not recommended
BoxingShort — 5’1” / 155 cm or lessFastest M1s in the game
Muay ThaiShort–medium — 5’3” / 160 cm or less—
KarateMedium — around 5’7” / 170 cm—
KureMedium–tall — 5’9” / 175 cm or tallerReach lands the M2 grabs; shorter builds stay viable
SluggerMedium–tall — 5’10” / 177 cm or moreExtra HP offsets Unstable’s added damage taken
CapoeiraTall — 6’0” / 183 cm or tallerRange is the gameplan
WrestlingTall — 6’0” / 183 cm or tallerGrab reach
HakariTall — 6’0” / 183 cm or tallerKick reach (disputed — see below)
WingChunTall — 6’0”–6’11” (183–211 cm)Short is the viable alternative; medium not recommended

Three styles publish no height at all — Striker, CQC, and Kyokushin — with the cards literally saying a recommendation “will be added when a META surfaces”. Mishima carries community advice instead (medium-to-tall for strike reach), and the four September styles have no official builds.

Where the Community Meta Agrees — and Where It Doesn’t

Community style guides document three height interactions of their own, and two of them match the official cards exactly:

  • Boxing rewards short characters — fast, low blows that force constant parries. Official card agrees: 5’1” or less.
  • Slugger is built for tall frames — its high-risk power punches want the reach. Official card agrees: 5’10” or more, with the added note that the extra HP offsets Unstable’s damage penalty.
  • Hakari splits the sources — community guides report Hakari’s burst damage turns inconsistent on tall builds, while its official card recommends tall for kick reach. Both claims are current and neither is testable from text; the Hakari page keeps both on the record.

Everything else plays fine at average height, per the community consensus — the official builds optimize each kit, they do not gate it.

Ethnicity: the Other Attribute Rerolls Touch

Height has a sibling on the same creation screen: ethnicity, which decides which surname pool your character draws from. The verified numbers, from the names guide: 95% of rolls land in the Japanese pool — 1,013 of the game’s 5,902 surnames — so a European, Middle Eastern, Latino, Indian, or African surname means you hit a 1-in-100 ethnicity roll. Surnames cannot be picked or edited; only a full reroll redraws them.

Height FAQ

What is the best all-round height in Gakuran?

Mid-height. The official builds cluster at the extremes — short for Ali, Boxing, and Muay Thai; tall for the grab and kick kits — so a mid build is never optimal, but it is never wrong either. Commit to an extreme only after you know which style you are chasing.

Does height affect anything outside combat?

No documented effect. Execute, carry, jobs, and every non-combat system are pure inputs and interactions — the controls guide notes execute and carry have no height requirement. Height’s documented impact is entirely about reach in fights.

Why does Wing Chun's height range reach six feet eleven inches?

Because the card publishes a range rather than a threshold: 6’0”–6’11”, the widest window on any card, with short (4’11”–5’3”) named as the viable alternative and medium builds explicitly ruled out. It is the strongest height wording in the game — matched only by Ali’s card ruling out medium from the short side.
